August 19 Meeting: Farmers' Markets in Our Community
When did you last shop at a farmers’ market in Northport,
Suttons Bay, Leland or farther afield? What did you buy there and why? Why do
such markets exist at all? This month's discussion leader, David Weeks of La
Casa Verde Produce, will help us explore these questions.
The food is the best in town. Fresh produce is the star of
the show, but there are also baked goods, meats, flowers, crafts, and all manner of things
you won’t find in a shopping center, a store on main street, or on line.
Farmers’ markets are more than just a source of fresh, high-quality, local produce. They bring people together. You run into friends and neighbors you know and strike up conversations with people you might otherwise never meet. They are important parts of our social infrastructure – an antidote to too much time on screens and too little socializing face to face.
