July 17 Meeting: The Mental Healthy Crisis in American Education

The State of Michigan has long been a leader in education, beginning even before it became a state. Today, though, universal access and adequate funding may not be enough. Our kids have been suffering, with more depression, anxiety and other behavioral disorders than ever before. These problems show up at all levels, from preschool through college.

What's going on? How different is today's crisis from what other generations have faced? What are schools and colleges doing about it?

Join us to discuss these issues, with an introduction by Barbara Conley, at this month's Cracker Barrel, Wednesday, July 17. We will meet at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Church, Northport, as usual. Here are some readings to get us started. Please feel free to add your own, below, as a comment. We're looking forward to seeing you there Please invite your guests and summer neighbors to join us!

  1. Jonathan Haidt is currently focused on adolescent mental health. His new book, THE ANXIOUS GENERATION or his blog (the name of which I forget) might be worth a look.
