August 7 Meeting: American Support for Ukraine
Russia’s war on Ukraine has been a dominant theme in US foreign policy for the last year and a half. In the year and a half to come, Ukraine’s war and U.S. support for it is likely to play a major role in presidential primaries and the general election. We propose to devote our August 17 Cracker Barrel meeting to a discussion of American support for Ukraine.
The Biden administration, together with its G-7 allies and NATO, stand forthrightly in support of Ukraine’s war
effort. Bipartisan backing remains strong, for reasons outlined in the
Washington Post by conservative commentator Marc
Thiessen. But, as polling
from the Brookings Institution shows, opinions remain divided on how long
to continue the support, its cost to American taxpayers, and ways that the war might
end.
